Customer StoriesAxyomCore and Telenor demonstrated how an autonomous edge architecture can maintain critical 5G services at remote locations, even when connectivity to the central network is interrupted.
Telenor Group is a leading telecommunications and technology company operating across Northern Europe and Asia, serving more than 114 million customers worldwide. As part of its ongoing network evolution, Telenor is advancing its 5G architecture to support more flexible, resilient, and distributed use cases. AxyomCore works with Telenor Nordics and Telenor Norway to help enable this evolution and bring advanced 5G capabilities closer to where they are needed.

Autonomous Edge: Resilient connectivity for any environment

Remote communities, industrial sites and mission-critical operations often depend on long-distance transport links to connect back to a centralized mobile core.

When those links are disrupted by severe weather, fiber cuts or challenging geography, essential voice, data and operational services can be affected.

Telenor worked with AxyomCore to demonstrate a more resilient approach: a distributed 5G architecture capable of keeping services available locally during a backhaul outage.

The challenge

Telenor needed to ensure that 5G services could continue operating at remote sites when connectivity to the central core was temporarily unavailable.

The architecture connected facilities in Fornebu and Svalbard, approximately 2,000 kilometres apart and operating in very different environments.

The objective was to allow the a remote site to operate autonomously when needed, without requiring a fully standalone network during normal operations.

The solution

AxyomCore deployed cloud-native 5G Core network functions across the central and edge locations.
During normal operation, the remote site remained connected to the central core. If the transport link became unavailable, the edge instance automatically took over the functions required to maintain local services.
Local user traffic could also remain at the edge through the AxyomCore UPF, helping reduce dependency on the central site and avoid unnecessary data transport.

The architecture enabled:

  • Automatic failover between central and edge core functions

  • Local breakout for traffic at the remote site

  • Continued voice and data services during backhaul disruption

  • Lower latency for locally delivered applications

  • Centralized operations during normal network conditions
